I noticed this week that the more I learn German, the easier my English skills worsen. So, I decided to write one blog posting in English. Maybe the next one is in German :) I’ll see! However, I am glad that my abilities to understand English speech and read English texts haven’t worsen. How I met your mother, Gossip Girl and Desperate Housewives still keep my English skills in order.. Yeah, and a couple of courses and other Erasmus students as well of course.
My lectures started this week. I really looked forward to them, because I had had quite much free time during a couple of previous weeks. Well, I’ve actually looked forward to lectures and new courses every autumn at TKK, but here it felt and still feels different. Not only the courses are new, but also all the course practices, colleagues and studying environments are new and different. I am very excited about studying (and being here), and even about going to lectures, wow! I doubt that my studying enthusiasm lasts very long, so I am going to enjoy it now as much as possible.
I visited last Tuesday one of my best starting lectures ever in a course called HCI Design Patterns. The lectures and exercises of the course are in English. The lecturer is German, but his English was really good. He spoke fast, clearly, and in general was really inspiring, which is really different from the lecturers I am get used to. The subjects were discussed quite fast but explained with interesting and funny examples. In addition, the usability subjects seem to be approached here at RWTH in a bit different way than at TKK. Here they’re looked more from the design view, not only from evaluation or testing view, which is really good! Other 3 starting lectures were also okay, but not as fabulous as the one I described. On Thursday I had also one lecture in German. After the lecture I was really proud of myself, because I could understand nearly everything the lecturer spoke. However, I didn’t have enough courage to answer her questions aimed to students, although I would have known some of the answers. Maybe in a couple of weeks I will!
In addition to studying, I’ve done quite a lot of sports again. I just seem to still have pretty much free time :) On Monday I tried circuit training. It was fun and not as tough as I had imagined, although it lasted 1,5 hours. I also realized that because there isn’t probably going to be any show in Aachen in winter, running will be easier than in Finland in winter. Wohoo! But I guess it’ll be much darker, because there isn’t any show. Too bad :(
Tomorrow I’m going to see Körperwelten exhibition in Cologne with my buddy and a couple of friends of him. That is, German company again. I’m really looking forward both to the exhibition and to the new people!
